Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry

UW Hospital is a tertiary care, Level 1 trauma center, which services a wide diversity of patients from not only the Madison area, but also from all of Wisconsin and parts of the Midwest.  The patients come from a wide diversity of socioeconomic, gender, and cultural backgrounds.

The hospital has highly specialized and comprehensive programs in a wide variety of medical areas including organ transplantation medicine, cancer treatment, invasive cardiology, burn, transplant, critical care medicine, assisted reproductive technologies, and rehabilitation medicine.  These units provide resident trainees experience with state-of-the art medical technologies and the social and ethical issues surrounding them.  Like many university hospitals, it draws patients with more complicated and unusual medical disorders.

Our residents work on a Consult team that includes an attending physician, nurse practitioner, medical students, and residents rotating from other services.  The most common issues that arise are suicide risk assessments, management of delirium, assessment of decisional capacity, and complex ethical issues.  Our residents also see consults at the adjust VA hospital.  The CL service is an outstanding opportunity for our residents to teach medical students and other residents.
